What does Humanely Raised mean?

'Humanely raised' refers to a set of livestock farming practices aimed at minimizing animal suffering and improving the overall welfare of animals raised for food. This includes aspects such as diet, living conditions, medical care, and the way they are handled.

Ensuring Humanely Raised Livestock

There are various certifications that enforce humane farming standards, including our favorite, A Greener World. These organizations perform regular audits of farms to ensure they're adhering to the standards. You also have control by simply asking what your meat producer's specific written policies and procedures are regarding humane treatment. If they can't answer your question in specific detail, thats a red flag.

Benefits of Humanely Raised Livestock

Humans: Humanely raised animals often lead to healthier meat, eggs, and dairy products. These animals are less stressed, which may reduce the risk of diseases that could potentially transfer to humans. When animals get sick, the humane thing to do is to treat them in order to give them the best chance possible. However, once treated, do they remain part of the food chain? Watch for another article in our series that addresses this.

Animals: The obvious beneficiaries are the animals themselves. A humane approach ensures animals lead a more natural life with less suffering. It insured the animal is given the dignity it deserves to live a life how it was created to live. Cows foraging grass, in sunshine, Pigs, tooting and wallowing, Chicken, scratching through grass to find those bugs and worms that omnivore eat.

Ecosystem: Farms that prioritize animal welfare often align with sustainable farming practices, leading to a healthier ecosystem by maintaining soil health, reducing water pollution, and encouraging biodiversity. Regeneration aligns wonderfully with animal welfare.

Consumer Control

To ensure your meat, eggs, and dairy are humanely raised, look for products that have been certified by trusted animal welfare organizations. Buying from local farms where you can see the animals' living conditions can also be a good approach. Ask your local farm or ranch to see their written policies and procedures and ask how they're enforced.

Do remember that not all labels are fully transparent or regulated by the FDA, so it's essential to research the farms and producers behind the products you buy.
